My focus is on body-centered modalities that aim to fundamentally shift how we experience ourselves in the world. Here are some of the types of support I provide, all integrated to create a comprehensive foundation for healing and transformation.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy DBT

DBT or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is an evidence based approach with a long track record of helping people repair their lives.  The term dialectic is a philosophical term that describes the examination of the tension between two opposing ideas or elements. We use a dialectic when we want to find the truth of a situation that is not black or white. For example, we can be at once both rational and emotional with our thinking and in relationships.  Either extreme of these strategies is limiting but a skillful blending of the two creates what DBT calls “Wise Mind.” The skills of DBT have four goals; improving mindfulness, becoming more effective in relationships, learning to tolerate stress, and building emotional regulation.  It is a systematic method to achieve high levels of empowered competence.  All skills eventually land at one place; a wiser, more self aware, grounded and connected human. 

Recovery Coaching

Accountability is the name of the game when you are ready to make some serious changes in your life. When you have had enough of the same old addictive behaviors with the same old negative results you need to make an effective game plan and execute your goals. You are not alone in your journey. I will help you identify precise and measurable goals and then hold you accountable to achieving them in sensible realistic bite size pieces. Whether you are just beginning your recovery journey or well experienced in sobriety we all have issues we can work on and an experienced coach makes change exciting and rewarding. Nature Based Equine-Assisted Counseling

Equine-assisted counseling harnesses the bond between humans and horses to promote emotional and psychological well-being. Participants engage in activities such as grooming, leading, and when ready, mounted work on horses with guidance and instruction. Horses, being perceptive creatures, provide immediate feedback by responding to participants' behaviors and emotions. This form of therapy fosters self-awareness, trust-building, and communication skills. Participants confront and address personal issues within a non-judgmental environment, cultivating resilience and self-esteem. Effective for a range challenges, equine-assisted counseling facilitates enduring positive transformations in individuals' lives through genuine connection and somatically felt introspection.

Gestalt

Gestalt counseling offers profound benefits by promoting self-awareness and personal growth. James Hart Counseling supports individuals and treatment providers in facilitating drug and alcohol recovery focused groups by integrating heart-centered and nature-based experiences. Drawing from Gestalt, Interpersonal Neurobiology, Mindfulness, DBT, CBT, and SMART Recovery, James Hart's approach enhances the effectiveness of group therapy sessions. Gestalt Equine Groups

James Hart Counseling offers equine-assisted group therapy at Hart Family Farm. These transformative, experiential, and nature-based interventions incorporate Gestalt techniques with relational horsemanship. Focused on cultivating authentic and mutually beneficial relationships with horses these groups build confidence in our felt body awareness. Horses provide immediate and accurate feedback about subtle energy, basic safety, and trust. By slowing down in the here and now we can overtly practice practical and somatically engaged relationship skills that are easily transferable to our human to human connections.
